After such a warm weekend it gives me the utmost pleasure to be reporting a change to our summer forecast, starting this week! We're talking the return of monsoonal moisture - something I hinted on just last week. Now the rumors can be put to rest as I've got a much clearer picture when it comes to the state's chances for some more rain and storm activity. This surge of monsoonal moisture is expected to arrive by Tuesday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin over higher altitude areas before spreading across the valleys through the second half of the week. The first round of activity doesn't look like it'll be producing much rainfall but heavier rain rates and even a threat for isolated flash flooding will be possible Wednesday through the remainder of the week.
All this being said, high pressure remains the dominant force coming into Monday. Temperatures will be remaining warm with highs topping off around 5°F above seasonal norms. A spinning low pressure system to our west will be responsible for shifting winds flow and bringing in the influx of monsoonal moisture starting Tuesday. Again, most of the initial activity will be confined to the higher-based areas of Utah bringing very little rainfall and potentially gusty winds. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for areas of central and southern Utah. By Wednesday, the spread of moisture begins across northern Utah and southwest Wyoming. With an increase in moisture, temperatures are expected to cool-down during the midweek.
