The winds of change are on the way, meaning I'm tracking cooler temps and a break from the continuous 90s we've been battling for quite sometime. Updated extended temperature outlook models show a much needed downward trend coming into the next 6-10 and 8-14 days. Below normal temperatures look to return with gradually falling highs starting today though Sunday. Highs could return to the low 90s and even upper 80s by the weekend's end which is a stark difference when compared to where we were back at the start of the month (a record breaking 105° in Salt Lake City on August 1st)! The bad news in all of this is that the precipitation outlooks continue to keep a good majority of the state dry with higher chances for below average precipitation 6-10 and 8-14 days out. This means fire danger will remain a big threat, especially in areas that have seen very little rain over the last several weeks. That being said, some areas of Utah will be seeing a chance for shower and storm development through the week.
Northwest Utah sees the highest chances for more organized storm development with areas located further south facing more isolated threats. Despite southwest winds and increasing dew points instability remains low; any storms that do manage to form over higher terrain have the potential to move into valley areas but won't be able to hold themselves together. Threats with any storms would be brief heavy rain and gusty outflow winds. Once again, any activity flaring up across southern Utah needs to be watched, but the aforementioned southwest flow will aid in keeping any flash flood threats to a minimum.
